Hibernation for butterflies

The Butterfly hibernation box is designed to provide a habitat for hibernating butterflies. In order for fine slits to be formed, into which the butterflies can crawl in and go into hibernation over the winter, the nest should be filled with bark. Thicker bark is preferred, so that the filling is not too compact. It should be well filled, yet not too tight as it is important that narrow cavities are formed into which the butterflies can crawl in.

Placement of the nest

The nest should be placed near plants that butterflies are attracted to. Examples of such plants are: lavender, nettle and butterfly bushes. This way the butterflies are given the chance to find their way into the nesting box.
