About the Mandarin Duck
The Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) is a small but striking duck, unusual for nesting in trees. The male shows vivid orange “sails” on his back and a red bill, while the female is softer brown-grey with white markings. Native to East Asia, Mandarin Ducks have spread to wetlands across Europe. When the chicks hatch, they boldly leap from their tree nests – often from remarkable heights.
