Weighing between 1,5 and 3 tonnes the common hippopotamus is one of the largest land living mammals. The hippo spends the day in water but comes out at night to feed on land, consuming up to 40kg per night. Although viewed by many as peaceful herbivores they have been known to eat both antelopes and wildebeest and have a remarkably aggressive attitude. In the wild hippos can live to the age of 40.
