Each box is crafted from cherry wood, prized for its warm colour tones and beautiful grain patterns. No two pieces are identical – natural variations in pattern and colour make every box unique. The hand-carved surface plays with light and shadow, highlighting the timber's natural beauty. The construction draws on traditional woodworking techniques inspired by shrink pots. This age-old method joins the wood without nails or screws, allowing the timber to move naturally with changes in humidity. The lifelike wren at the top captures the bird's distinctive round shape and perky, upright tail in beautiful detail. We finish each piece with linseed oil that you can refresh to maintain its lustre.
The wren's Latin name (Troglodytes troglodytes) comes from the Greek words meaning "creeper" and "cave dweller" – a nod to its habit of hiding in small crevices and corners. This tiny brown bird with its characteristic short, upright tail moves restlessly close to the ground, picking insects from cracks in bark and stone. Often hidden from view, it announces its presence at dawn with a surprisingly loud, vibrant song that seems far too big for such a small bird.
