Description
A lively golden-yellow little finch that appears in flocks throughout North America, often balancing in the seed stalks of thistles.
The strong, fine beak reveals that it is a seed eater. The male's bright yellow back and belly make it easy to recognise. It has a small black cap, white stripes on the wing and a black wing margin. The female is more inconspicuous, but her pale yellow or yellowish-beige body, like the male's, is evenly coloured without any shading.
It likes to appear in flocks with the small-sized finch, another North American species with a yellow belly, but only the golden finch has a full-yellow back.
A happy chirping stanza of high clear notes. Especially in spring, the male is an energetic singer.
In nature, it eats mostly seeds from thistles, grass, trees and shrubs, but among insects. It is attracted to bird tables with sunflower seeds.
The female builds the open, bowl-shaped nest in low shrubbery. It is tightly joined together by straws and fine roots.
All of North America.
