Description
The little flying jewel, Anna's Hummingbird, is often seen in flower beds and flowering hedgerows in the western USA. Like other hummingbirds, it is lightning-fast in flight and has the unique ability to stand still for long periods while sucking nectar.
Anna's hummingbird is medium-sized among hummingbirds, the size of a ping-pong ball, and weighs 4 grams. It has a straight beak that is shorter than in many other species. The male has a brilliant red head, and the female has a small red throat patch. Both sexes have bodies that shimmer in grey-green.
Unlike several other U.S. hummingbirds with red chins, Anna's hummingbird also has a red head.
The vocal trope can last up to 10 seconds, with a whirring sound interrupted by small, short chirps.
Nectar from flowers and insects but likes to visit feeders with sugar water throughout the year.
The small nest, about 3.5 cm in diameter, is often wedged into a clump of branches a few metres above the ground and is artfully woven from plant parts, spider webs and feathers.
Lives in the western and southwestern United States.
