Description

Description:

Many people consider the Atlantic puffin their favourite bird, with its colourful, parrot-like beak and lively behaviour in the water. If you are lucky, you can see it with its beak full of small fish on the way to feed its young. It lives most of its life on the open seas.

Atlantic puffin pairs mate for life and preserve their bond by rubbing their beaks together.

Appearance:

It is a relatively small bird, about 30 centimetres long, with a short and stocky body. It tends to float on the water; you can usually see the black back, white sides, and even the orange-red flippers. But the large, striped beak of the adult stands out the most.

Similar Birds:

In Northern Europe, it is reminiscent of the little auk. It also has close relatives on the Asian and North American sides of the North Pacific, although they differ in the colour and size of their bodies and beaks.

Sounds and Songs:

Its call is a repetitive, complaining, creaking sound: aah-aah-aah.

Diet:

The Atlantic puffin feeds almost exclusively on small fish.

Nest:

They nest on grasslands or cliffsides along the coast. They line the bottom of their nests with grass.

Geographic Range:

Atlantic puffins nest in Iceland, along northern Europe's western- and north coasts, and as far south as England. They also inhabit Greenland and the eastern shores of America and Canada.
