Description
The Baltimore Oriole is a large songbird that is easy to spot high up in the trees, with its powerful body in bright orange or yellow. It forages by climbing and clinging to the branches of the canopy.
A sturdy bird, about 18–22 cm, with a long tail. The male's colour is a saturated orange, and the female's underside is yellow, with brownish-yellow sides. Wings have black feathers with white wing bands.
To distinguish it from several other North American Orioles, one has to look at the head. The male has an all-black head—the female, on the other hand, has no black at all on the head.
A rich and melodic whistling with many variations characterizes the Baltimore Oriole.
Food consists of insects, berries, fruits, and nectar. It can be attracted to feeders with sugar water, like hummingbirds, but must have a perch to feed.
The female builds the nest, which hangs like a large sock from a high branch in a deciduous tree.
The Baltimore Oriole breeds in eastern and central North America but spends winters in Central America.
