Description
The small, lively black-capped chickadee is a group creature, moving in flocks in areas of mixed forest. Curious, alluring, and dainty, it is often seen in the vicinity of humans.
A medium-sized small bird, about 13-14 cm. The sexes are similar, with a black cap and bib and a large white cheek patch. The rest of the body is yellowish beige. The beak is pointed.
The Carolina tit is very similar to the black-capped chickadee, but has a song with more beats and slightly softer colours in its plumage.
The vocals are a clear, loud, two-stanza whistle with a light sway at the end. The warning sounds are many and varied, and its English name, chickadee, is sound mimicking.
Seeds, insects and spiders. In winter, it likes to visit bird feeders. The black-capped chickadee often hides its food and then revisits its hiding places.
Out in the wild, it settles in holes in tree trunks, but it breeds willingly in nests that should be placed inside among other trees.
A resident bird that lives in forested areas of the northern and western United States and in parts of Canada.
