Description

A male Bluethroat, with a brilliant blue breast and clear singing, is a bird not to be missed in northern Scandinavia or the Alps in the summer.

Appearance

A slender and elegant bird, about 15 cm. In summer, the male is recognized by the blue bib by a small red spot (the northern breed) or white spot (in the rest of Europe, but also the Nordic countries). The female is more discreet, with a chin in yellow-beige tone, sometimes with a hint of blue. Both male and female have a powerful white eyebrow streak.

Similar birds

Even the Whinchat has a clear eyebrow streak and wiggles with the tail like the bluethroat, but gives a chubbier impression.

Sounds and song

The song is energetic and pervasive with many repetitions and has been likened to that of the nightingale. But the bluethroat can also mimic other birds, mechanical sounds and water.
