Description

The chaffinch is one of the most sighted and popular birds. Along with the willow wren it is the bird which occurs in the greatest numbers in the UK.

Appearance

It stands out by it short, thick and conical beak, on which the nostrils are closer to the bridge of the beak than the edges of the jaws. The male distinguishes itself from the female as his forehead is black where the back begins and a greyish blue on the rest of the head, except the cheeks which are a reddish brown. This colour also stretches from the cheeks down to the neck and breast, where the female has a matted greyish brown colour instead.

Similar bird

Distinguishable from the redstart and the robin because of its white wing bands.

Sounds and song

The song is rattling and the call is repetitive.

Food and bird tables

Visits the bird table from time to time.
There are approximately 6 million pairs of chaffinches in the UK. This numbers appear to have been rather constant for several hundred years, something which may depend on the fact that it doesn’t demand a very large breeding environment.

The nest and hollows

A bowl-shaped nest consisting of moss, lichen, feathers and tallow is built in shrubs or trees, often in a forked branch. The eggs are lain in May-June and then brooded for 12-14 days. During one season, the chaffinch normally has time to hatch two broods.
