Description:

Small and fast, but hard to miss in its blue-green shiny plumage. Likes to perch on a branch by flowing water and swoop down when it sees prey in the water. Afterwards, it can be seen sitting with several small fish in its beak before handing them out to its chicks.

Appearance:

It is around 16 centimetres long and has a large, pointed beak. In the right light conditions, it is sparkling in its colours. It has a short neck and tail. The female has slightly paler colours than the male.

Similar bird:

Similar in colour and size to no other bird.

Sounds and songs:

A repeated, short whirring sound in a high pitch.

Food:

Freshwater fish and aquatic larvae.

Nest:

The common kingfisher digs its nest hole in river banks.

Geographic range:

The common kingfisher, with several similar subspecies, is found throughout Europe up to central Sweden, in northern Africa and in most of Asia.
