Description

Description

The smallest swimming duck, found in large numbers on sheltered shorelines of lakes, rivers and seas. Its size and the male's beautiful emerald green cheek medallion set it apart from other ducks.

Appearance

A white longitudinal stripe on the side and a light yellow triangle on the tail are good features of the male, in addition to the brown head with the green roundel. Females and juveniles are more modestly brown-spotted and similar to their close relative, the mallard, but smaller. In flight, the broad white wing band can be seen glowing.

Similar bird

The female is similar to the female mallard or garganey but much smaller. It has a green square on the back of the wing instead of the blue of the mallard. In Europe, the green-winged (American) teal is rarely seen. It has a vertical light yellow stripe on the side of the breast.

Sounds and songs

A short, raspy whistle krik-krik.

Diet

In fresh or salt water, it feeds on plants, insects and small crustaceans.

Nest

The Eurasian teal builds its modest nest on the ground, often some distance from the water and hidden under a branch or among the brushwood.

Geographic range

The Eurasian teal breeds throughout northern Europe and northern Asia but tends to move to the southern parts of the continents during winter.
