Description

In almost every grove from the south to the north of the UK there are a couple of willow warblers.

Appearance

A small, stretched out singer with a green back. Dirty white underneath with a yellow breast.

Similar bird

The chiffchaff has darker legs and more often stronger colouring, and the wood warbler has a marked yellow line on its brow.

Sounds and song

Its call is weak, but the song is soft and melancholic, somewhat descending and lasts for three seconds. Will begin with some high notes and reach its crescendo in the middle to ebb out afterwards.

Food and bird tables

The willow warbler lives off smaller beetles and larvae as well as plant lice, flies and mosquitos.

The nest and hollows

The female builds the nest directly on the ground, often freely but sometimes protected by a tuft of grass or a bush. It has an arched roof as well as a side entrance at ground level, and is made out of grass, moss and leaves. On the inside there is a vast amount of feathers, usually white.
