Description

(Gonepteryx rhamni)

Did you know that
During the winter, adult butterflies go into hibernation and wake up again during the spring. The Common Brimstone is usually one of the first signs of summer.

Geographical distribution

The Common Brimstone can be seen throughout Europe as well as in North Africa and Asia.

Appearance

The male is yellow while the female is pale yellow with a greenish tone. Both have an orange spot on each wing. When the Common Brimstone rests, its wings are always closed. That is because the underside of the wings has a pale yellowish-green colour and act as camouflage among the vegetation.

Life cycle

The Common Brimstone can live for up to 13 months and is one of the longest-lived butterflies. It hibernates as an adult butterfly. At the end of the summer, it feeds on nectar to build up energy reserves for the winter. The Common Brimstone goes into hibernation as early as August.
