(Vanessa atalanta)Did you know thatRed Admirals are becoming increasingly common in Scandinavia, despite the fact that they find it difficult to survive the winter. In Sweden, the Red Admiral is often the last butterfly of the summer and it can be seen flying around until late in the autumn before returning to more southern climes to overwinter.
Geographical distribution
Mainly southern Europe, Asia and South America, but also in Scandinavia and North America.
Appearance
A bright orange band across the brownish-black wings with white spots at the tips of the wings. The Red Admiral is very brightly coloured.
Life cycle
The Red Admiral arrives in Sweden from southern Europe in June. The female deposits her eggs on the leaves of stinging nettles. When the eggs hatch, the caterpillars remain on the stinging nettles where they were born and feed on them. New butterflies usually move to warmer climes when winter approaches. Those that stay in Sweden seldom survive.
