Description
The whitethroat will stay the winter south of the Sahara and feeds principally on berries. When they arrive in the UK the male will build a variety of simple nests out of which the female selects one to finish building.
The most typical behaviour among males is the flight song where he will rise vertically into the air a couple metres while singing, often with the feathers on his crown raised and a flexed tail. He will then dive in arches towards the female – sometimes so violently that the female sits with her wings and tail spread out, and leaps towards the male as if parrying an attack.
Appearance
A singer with a long tail and reddish-brown wings. The tail is brown with white borders.
